In our Drugs and Alcohol Awareness course you will learn about addictions and the problems associated with drug and alcohol misuse.
You will learn about the basic counselling skills that are required when treating individuals substance misuse disorder.
You will explore how alcohol can lead to addiction, due to its ability to create significant changes in the human physiology and brain chemistry, some individuals might overly rely on the properties of alcohol to relieve stress, relax, and improve mood.
You will explore the types of drug abuse and who is more at risk of developing an addiction, you will also explore the effects of misusing drugs.
You will consider that despite someone’s willingness to engage in recovery and to completely quit a substance, some intrusive thoughts and cravings for a drug might still appear out of nowhere.
This course will look at detoxification, or detox and you will learn that it is the process of removing any chemicals and substances associated with a drug from one’s body.
A detox process helps individuals safely manage their withdrawal symptoms when they stop consuming alcohol or drugs.
You will learn that addictions affect the brain and behaviour in such a way that people who misuse substances regularly find it difficult to resist urges and to quit.
At the end of our drugs and alcohol awareness course you will look at the factors that can significantly decrease the well-being of someone who misuses substances to cope with the demands of their life.

Units covered
Unit 1 – Introduction to drug and alcohol abuse – In the first unit of our drugs and alcohol awareness course, you will be presented with in-depth information on drug and alcohol addiction and on issues related to dependency. You will have the chance to gain a deeper understanding into various forms of dependencies and the problems associated with them. Furthermore, you will also be presented with useful information on the categories of people who are most vulnerable to developing an addiction disorder. Finally, this unit will conclude with some case studies of drug addiction.
Unit 2 – Basic counselling skills – In this unit you will look at the various components of a successful counselling alliance of clients who have an ongoing diagnosis of substance use disorder. More specifically, this unit will encompass the skills and competencies that are essential for building a strong therapeutic alliance. Furthermore, this unit will also look at motivational skills that counsellors and mental health professionals can use when treating individuals with addiction and dependency.
Unit 3 – Alcohol abuse – This unit will discuss problems associated with alcohol use and other issues related to alcohol abuse. You will have the chance to gain a better understanding of various types of alcohol and how these affect daily functioning and health. Furthermore, this unit will dive deeper into legal matters associated with alcohol use. Finally, you will be presented with some information about seeking support from alcohol abuse.
Unit 4 – Drugs – In this unit, you will have the chance to learn more about drug addiction and dependency and the problems associated with them. You will also gain valuable insights into various acts and policies that regulate drug abuse. Furthermore, you will also look into some practical matters, such as absenteeism that occurs as a result of a drug addiction disorder. You will learn about some policies and procedures in the workplace and the responsibilities of both the employee and employer in the context of substance misuse. Finally, you will learn about the support alternatives that are available for those who wish to recover from substance dependency.
Unit 5 – Getting treatment and support – This unit will look at various aspects of the treatment and support for drug and alcohol addiction disorders. You will be presented with in-depth information on treatment alternatives and side effects that might occur when attempting to quit a certain drug. Furthermore, you will learn how to detect the signs that might show a potential relapse back into addictive behaviours and how individuals who undergo treatment for drug abuse can stay motivated throughout their recovery journey.
Unit 6 – Problems associated with dependency – In our last unit of our drugs and alcohol awareness course, you will look in depth at some of the problems experienced by those dependent on drugs and alcohol. You will have the chance to gain a deeper understanding of how substances can negatively impact various aspects of someone’s life, such as work, health, productivity, relationships, self-esteem, and mental health. By the end of this unit, you will have a better understanding of the complexity of issues associated with drug dependency.
